Why You Shouldn't Set A New Year's Resolution

A new year is upon which means New Year’s Resolutions that will probably fall flat. How many of you make drastic lifestyle changes every January 1st, only to have fallen out of the habit by January 10th? 

I know I'm guilty of it! 

So this year, instead of setting New Year’s Resolutions and waking up as a brand new person on January 1st, I’m advocating that you don’t set a resolution. Instead, set an intention and watch gradual + lasting changes unfold throughout the whole year.

What is an intention?

An intention is thought or statement that you put out into the world, that you intend on happening. It is different than a goal or a resolution because those are very time specific and have a plan of action. An intention is a little bit more broad - you do not have a plan or know how it will come to fruition, you just trust that it will.

For example, a goal or a resolution could be to exercise for 30 minutes everyday, five days a week. A similar intention might be, you are going to live a healthier, more active lifestyle.

How + why does an intention work?

The purpose of an intention is to bring awareness to an area of your life that you want to shift. Has anyone ever pointed something out to you that you maybe have never noticed before? And then you start to see it everywhere?

That is how an intention works, once its brought to your awareness you’ll start to notice opportunities popping up everywhere.

So if you intend on living a healthier lifestyle, various opportunities to be healthier will pop-up. Maybe you’ll run into an old friend who is training for a marathon and you decide to join her. Maybe you’ll start to crave healthier foods and sugary, desserts won’t sound appealing.

Who knows how it will show up in your life. But it will show up exactly when + how you need it too.  

This is why intentions work. Because it doesn’t require you to commit to anything you don’t want to do. Instead it shifts you into a positive mindset and puts your focus on fulfilling the intention in a way that fulfills you.

Why is it important?

Intentions are important because they keep your mind open and keep you focused. Have you ever been so consumed in something that you miss other opportunities? That can happen when you are stuck in one way of doing something.

When you set an intention you don’t know what the journey will look like, so you are open to receiving what the universe has to offer.

This is much more sustainable + exciting.

So, how do you set an intention?

Take a look at your resolutions or an area of your life that needs shifting.

You are going to come up with a positive and open-ended statement to remind yourself of the intention.

If you want to start working out, eating cleaner, and living a healthier lifestyle maybe your statement is “I take care of my mind and body” or “I live a healthy lifestyle”.

Repeat this statement to yourself every morning + every night. Or write it down on a piece of paper and tape it to your mirror.

Just continually remind yourself of this intention to keep your focus, and wait to see what opportunities arise.

Now, decide what you want for 2018.
